Circus McGurkis continues to be a remarkable St. Petersburg tradition after more than four decades. It’s a celebration of our community’s creativity, activism, and beauty. Every October, Circus McGurkis highlights arts, crafts, music, games, and ideas with a special focus on activities for children and families of all ages.

 A St Petersburg Tradition

St. Petersburg’s Circus McGurkis tradition began in 1971 when a group of committed peace activists belonging to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) saw the need to bring together local families, activists, artists, and musicians for a day of sharing and creativity. Activities for children are always part of Circus McGurkis, along with food and music, but you never know what you might actually see. One year, a wheelchair dance troupe performed Swan Lake and brought tears to everyone’s eyes. Organizers annually seek something new and creative that highlights the value and worth of every individual while still focusing on our community’s wholeness and diversity.

If you missed the most recent Circus McGurkis, you also missed informal workshops on peculiar and interesting topics that included Urban Chicken Keeping, Qigong: a Breathing Technique, and the Edible/Medicinal Herb Walk. Music was provided by musicians including Dylan Cowles, Sydney Hilton, and the band One Step Closer.
